Take a look at this article: http://www.imperialviolet.org/2010/06/25/overclocking-ssl.html In January this year (2010), Gmail switched to using HTTPS for everything by default. Previously it had been introduced as an option, but now all of our users use HTTPS to secure their email between their browsers and Google, all the time. In order to do this we had to deploy no additional machines and no special hardware. On our production frontend machines, SSL/TLS accounts for less than 1% of the CPU load, less than 10KB of memory per connection and less than 2% of network overhead. Many people believe that SSL takes a lot of CPU time and we hope the above numbers (public for the first time) will help to dispel that. All of these claims about huge performance spikes date back to when SSL was new and a 100MHz Pentium was a bitchin' high-end processor.

On a semi-related note, is it possible to make your post history unavailable to third parties you haven't expressly approved? I guess that sort of feature increases everyone's risk of being taken in by scammers, spammers, and marketers, but I know I'd post more freely for it.

SPDY would be nicer. It's a whole lot faster and it's also encrypted. Chrome supports it and Firefox 11+ will support it, too.

That title seriously made me facepalm then downvote. Did you feel you needed to write like that to grab the attention of the mouth breathing masses?

valid point, I agree. But I think it will cost them so much

Between CA incompetence and this I think SSL is more a placebo than anything. If government authorities wanted to know what you're saying, they can know. It's more important to block legislation to allow them to legally use the information they collect against you without having to jump through too many hoops.
