What are your guy's opinion on parents who make their children call them 'sir' and 'ma'am'?

Cevaplar
"My mom taught us to refer to adult strangers as "sir" and "ma'am" as a sign of respect. Now I've on occasion said "ma'am" to my mom or "sir" to my dad when I was being addressed in a serious discussion or scolding when having done wrong, to also show respect, and that I understand the seriousness of the subject. But EXCLUSIVELY calling my parents "sir" and "ma'am"? That sounds so... cold and disconnected. Like having your kids see you as exclusively authority, and nothing familial. Kinda uncomfortable, actually. "

It's fucking weird and I don't understand it. I have a friend who was insisted to call her parents by their first names. Never mom or dad. Fucking weird.
I dislike it. No one is inherently so much better than me that they deserve to be addressed by a formal title if they're not going to reciprocate.
They were probably raised the same way
Unnecessary. I do call my son 'sir'.
Teaches kids respect at an early age I see no problem with it
I understand if it's strangers, but when it's parents it comes off as if they're disconnected
The same opinion I have other child abusers: They are shitty parents.
Well, that's how I grew up. I didn't know any grownups who were not called sir and ma'am by kids. This was the 1970s, mind you, but it didn't do any damage to the kids.
It's pretty authoritarian.
