I've dealt with some pretty messy scanned documents before, and honestly, the standard free tools usually fall flat when it comes to old-school fonts or gothic scripts. Most of the mainstream stuff is trained on modern, clean typefaces, so when you throw something a bit aged at them, the output is just a mess of random characters. You're better off looking into engines that allow for custom model training or those specifically tuned for historical archives.

If you're tech-savvy enough to run something locally, there are some open-source projects that let you use specific language packs designed for old prints. It takes a bit of tinkering to set it up, but it's way more reliable than those web-based drag-and-drop sites that act like they can read anything. I had to digitize some old manuals a while back and found that cleaning up the image contrast first helps a ton, even if the OCR tool isn't perfect.

Also, don't waste your time with the basic cloud apps because they'll just hallucinate half the text. If the font is really stylized or from a certain century, you might need to use a tool where you can manually train it on a few pages first. It's a bit of a headache to get right, but it's the only way to get decent results without paying for some expensive professional service.
