My uncle worked in the industry for years before he retired, and he used to tell me about this one guy who was a massive car nut. Instead of a normal hearse, the family insisted on having him strapped into the driver's seat of his vintage convertible. They had to get special permits just to drive the thing to the cemetery, with the body literally behind the wheel. It was definitely a sight that turned heads on the highway, especially since he was wearing his favorite leather jacket and sunglasses.

Then there was this other one that sticks out because it was more of a party than a funeral. The lady had planned everything herself, including a live jazz band and an open bar right next to the gravesite. She even left money in her will to make sure everyone got a plate of fancy catering instead of those sad little dry sandwiches. It felt more like a send-off celebration than a mourning session, which honestly felt a lot more natural for the crowd she ran with.

It’s wild how much people want to shake things up when they go. You see all sorts of themes now, from sports gear everywhere to people wanting their ashes shot out of cannons. My uncle always said the standard black suit and somber music vibe is fading out fast, and people are way more into showing off their actual personality one last time. Pretty cool way to go if you ask me, way better than just a standard ceremony that nobody remembers.

Working in this business for a while now, you really see everything. Once, we had a guy who was a huge fan of classic rock, and he insisted on having a full-blown stage setup instead of a regular casket arrangement. We had to wire up a whole sound system to blast his favorite tracks, and the attendees were basically treating it like a concert instead of a service. It was definitely strange, but honestly, it felt way more like a celebration of life than the usual gloomy stuff.

Then there was this one time a woman requested a burial where her pet iguana was placed in a custom-made little compartment inside the casket. It took some serious planning to make sure everything was respectful but also followed all the rules. It sounds pretty bizarre, but seeing how much comfort it gave the family to have them together made the whole weird setup worth the extra effort.

I’ve realized that people just want to go out on their own terms. Whether it’s specific themes, strange music choices, or unconventional transport, nothing surprises me anymore. Most of the time, the weirder the request, the more it actually reflects the personality of the person we're saying goodbye to. It makes the day-to-day routine a lot more interesting, that's for sure.
