Choosing between those two really depends on what you're into for weekends. I've spent time in both spots, and honestly, Rapid City feels a bit more lively because of the Black Hills right there. If you like hiking, mountain biking, or just being near cool spots like Custer State Park, you'll probably dig Rapid way more. It’s got a solid downtown scene that’s grown quite a bit lately, which is nice if you want to grab a drink or dinner without driving forever.

Great Falls has its own charm, but it’s definitely a quieter, slower vibe. It’s situated on the Missouri River, so if you're big into fly fishing or just want a more laid-back lifestyle, it might be your speed. The cost of living is pretty comparable in both places, but I find the weather in Rapid City to be just a hair more manageable in the winter, even though the wind in Montana is a whole different beast that can drive you crazy after a while.

If you're working remotely or just need reliable internet, both have gotten way better recently. I’d lean towards Rapid City if you want easier access to bigger cities or airports for traveling, as it feels a bit less isolated than Great Falls. Either way, you're looking at a serious change of pace from bigger metros, but for outdoorsy stuff, you really can't lose with either pick.
