You could just disappear. Not forever, but for moments at a time, and no one would think anything of it. Main phone was a land-line at the house. I had a cell phone by the end of the 90s, but even still that was 'for emergencies' and not really used.

You either had to find out the hard way or rely on word of mouth to know if someone was crazy prior to dating. No Facebook stalking.
