I gave someone I knew money one time who had her power shut off due to non payment. There was a concern that CPS would catch wind and remove her kids from the house. She got her power turned back on and her and her kids were able to return to the house, and CPS didn't remove the kids from her care. I felt good at the time. I found out a month later that she had gotten heavy into drugs and selling drugs with her kids in the house. She had a boyfriend now living with her on and off who had a criminal history of robbery and accessory to murder. Her sister found out as well and filed to have the kids moved to her custody to get them out of her house. I never should have gotten involved. Her kids were in a dangerous situation even longer due to my involvement.

You don't always regret it?
Never lend a friend money. If you are tempted to, then don't lend, but give them money. Never ever expect repayment from friends and family. I gave a buddy $100 one time with full expectation that I would never see it again despite assurances from him that he would pay me back. 15 years later he still isn't in a financial position to pay me back, but he is still a friend, and that is worth more than $100 any day.
As a rule I lend nothing I cannot consider a gift so I dont run into this
