Are people who have a private drug lab smart since they have some knowledge in chems?

YES. People think criminals are dumb but running a drug lab is incredibly complicated. You would have to have scientific knowledge, business knowledge, street smarts, and most importantly, how to avoid being caught which puts pressure on everything else. It's the same as running a drug lab which specialises in pain killers for example. Only difference is that it's illegal and a lot more dangerous as it wouldn't be regulated.

No. They wouldn't have to be secret if they were smart.

I believe the people who initially concocted the drugs may be smart but a lot of the people who make them now just copy what has been done for years. From what I've seen in some documentaries it seems that there is some creativity involved in trying to stand out from competitors so that might take some above average intelligence in some cases.

No. I've arrested people who manufacture clandestinely fentanyl who can't read as well as bagged and tagged manufacturers of meth after they've blown themself up. Just because they were told to do x+y=z doesn't mean they understand the intricacies of what they are actually involved in.
