The first things that come to mind are Ariel Pink and Jay Reatard. They are/were very contemporary but harkened to older music. As for anyone telling you to listen to Bloc Party, Interpol The Killers...do yourself a favor and just listen to the bands from the 80s they blatantly ripped off (Joy Division, Mission of Burma, The Soft Boys). It's okay to not like contemporary music because 95% of it are copycats of underground 80's bands and 75% of it just sucks donkey balls. EDIT: I am 23 and I mostly only like music before the 2000s. Can't really even think of one band worthwhile that started after 2000.

Big Business is one of the better new-ish heavy bands I've found in a while. I don't really care for their third album (so much so that I forgot what it's called), but Head for the Shallow and Here Come the Waterworks are both great.
I'm 33 and I think I field this one.... Devin Townsend Broken Bells Awolnation Zimmers Hole The Dead Weather Gayngs Devin Townsend again
I'm 29, does it count? I really like Interpol, the Strokes, Bloc Party and the XX. It's all kind of alt-rocky, but who knows, something could happen. Everything else I like is hip-hop and dubstep/dnb, so you're kind of SOL there. Good luck yo.
I'm 29, but wanted to weigh in on the topic anyway with some stuff you may not have heard: Classic rock: Machinegun by Band of Gypsys Folk rock: Be Here Now by Ray LaMontagne Post Rock: Your Hand In Mine by Explosions In The Sky Pop...I guess?: Drumming Song by Florence + The Machine Some/all of this might be too soft for your tastes, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway. Ya never know. EDIT: Just wanted to mention Pandora, in case you didn't know about it. Great way to find new music.
I'm 28, but I listen to a lot of music, so I figured I'd chime in: Changing Modes The Brooklyn What Brian Jonestown Massacre Flugente Lorraine Leckie and her Demons Quasi Youth Sounds Kimya Dawson Andrew Jackson Jihad Jay Reatard The Microphones Astronautalis The Mountain Goats Boy Eats Drum Machine May Ling I would agree with you that music today sucks in comparison with the 80s and 90s. The music I suggested is probably not up your alley, but I don't really know a lot of Metal/Rock type stuff unfortunately.
I was in the same situation for a long time, I stopped keeping up with album releases and just listened to the same stuff I grew up on/listened to in college over and over. A couple years ago I forced myself to listen to new music and, no surprise, there is a lot of awesome music being produced today. I am 30, and here is my list. The National(not that new I guess...) Dan Deacon Miike Snow Crystal Castles Fuck Buttons Fever Ray Digitalism Royksopp My tastes lean more towards electro and rock.
I like the hippity-hop with the African-American gentlemen. It seems that sometimes they're angry, but mostly they want to have sex. Most interesting.
"Check out http://thecurrent.org . It's our local public radio music station, but I find a lot of newer music on there that I like. They also have a free song of the day "podcast" that turns up good stuff, too. "
