"I was writing software and administering PCs for an engineering company in high school, making more money than any of my friends. We hired an elderly engineer, call him "Frank". Frank told my boss on day 1 that my working there was ridiculous and that he should fire me. He repeated this a lot, to everyone, even when I was standing right there. Poor Frank had a lot of computer and phone problems after that. Anytime he printed in Word, a macro seems to replace the company's name with a misspelling (my boss' pet peeve). His keyboard seemed to randomly repeat / omit / transpose keystrokes. The CPU seemed fine at 8am but got slower and slower as the day progressed. I laughed myself to tears listening to him scream at his PC and coworkers. Until he got into it with the boss and quit. Then I felt really, really guilty. To this day if I want to prank someone it isn't going to be on a computer. "

Everyone's got that one person who just grinds their gears, right? For me, it was this guy named Jari. We started working on the same renovation site back in 2019, and man, it was instant friction. He was one of those know-it-alls who thought he could do everything faster and better, even when he was clearly cutting corners. I remember one specific week we were trying to finish up a complex framing job, and he kept trying to change the specs just to save himself five minutes, ignoring the structural integrity entirely.

The breaking point came when he tried to blame a measurement error on me, claiming I gave him the wrong numbers for the rafters. I had my notes right there in my pocket, and I didn't hesitate to pull them out and show the site manager exactly what the math was. It was basically basic geometry, like calculating the hypotenuse for the slope using a^2 + b^2 = c^2, and he couldn't even argue with it. Seeing him shut up for once was honestly the highlight of that whole project.

We eventually stopped working together when the company split the crews up, which was a huge relief for everyone involved. Sometimes I see him driving around town, and I just shake my head. It’s funny how a guy like that can turn a simple job into a full-blown war, but I guess that's just life. At the end of the day, I learned to just double-check everything myself and never rely on someone who’s more interested in shortcuts than doing the job right.
