How to help a homeless person?

"I usually just buy them something good to eat and leave it at that. Most people are homeless because of mental illness, crime, drugs, some other addiction... and they've burned all their bridges with family and friends. You'll be really disappointed in how things turn out if you invest too much of your time and money into trying to "fix" them. They can get food from a number of different places for free, but the food is usually nothing special. The most I'll do is give them a good meal as a treat, something for them to enjoy. Most of them need help that's far beyond what a single person can provide...and many do not want help. "

damn nigga homeless people! the should care for demselfs! Buy him a damn dick!
A sleeping bag is a good start. In the long term, you need a mailing address to apply for jobs (and you can't just leave it blank, no one is going to hire a bum) and to apply for Medicaid and other social services. Would you feel comfortable letting him pick up mail at your place?
Not one of you has ever been homeless and, worse, you can't, in your wildest dreams, believe you ever will. Good Luck. And I hope that if it ever happens to you you're treated with all the humanity and largess you suggest here.
Give him a sleeping bag.
i feel like a sleeping bag would go a long way
You've already done more than a lot of people would, you've bought him a meal and followed through on your promise to help him look for shelter. That said - find out what he needs/what he has - Even something simple like gloves/socks/a hat might be useful. Don't push help onto him if he doesn't want it. Who knows, he might just want to be able to talk to someone who isn't going to judge him.
Perhaps make a care package of some food, socks, gloves, hat, blankets, and water, thermos of hot beverage for the time being and check on him later? Something to provide temporary relief for the time being as you try to assist with the situation? Good luck and be safe.
Make sure he has a good coat, thick socks and gloves. Hope you get help with the social worker. You are very kind.
Depends on how much your willing to do for him. You could always go for the extreme and invite him into your house, but I doubt thats a good idea. I would recommend continuing your seach for shelters and in the mean time, supplying him with basic necessities. Maybe you could buy him a tent or sleeping bag? Its better than nothing.
