They are named after William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody. The name was chosen back in 1947 for an older Buffalo football team after a fan contest. The winning entry suggested the name because it was a direct reference to the famed Wild West figure. The current NFL/AFL team just picked up that name when they started playing in 1960.
