In Ripper Street, Edmund Reid's daughter, Mathilda, goes through a dramatic ordeal:
Presumed Dead: At the beginning of the series, Mathilda is presumed dead after disappearing in a river accident (the SS Princess Alice disaster) during the Jack the Ripper case.
Alive But Hidden: A twist is revealed later. Mathilda actually survived the accident. However, Inspector Jedediah Shine (corrupt police officer) took her in and kept her hidden. After Shine's death, Long Susan (a brothel owner) hides Mathilda again to protect her from further police scrutiny.
Brief Escape and Capture: When Sergeant Bennet Drake discovers Mathilda is alive, Susan tells Reid she died while being cared for. Mathilda, however, escapes and ends up with a teenage pimp named Harry Ward. Reid and Drake eventually find her, but she runs away again.
Uncertain Fate: The show's ending leaves Mathilda's fate unclear. She's not seen reunited with her father.

Man, Ripper Street was such a wild ride, wasn't it? If you're talking about Edmund Reid's daughter, mathilda, she went through absolute hell. At the start of the show, everyone thought she died in that whole fire incident back in the day, which basically destroyed Reid's life and made him the grumpy guy we all knew for the first season. It was honestly heartbreaking how he carried that guilt around for years.
But then, plot twist, she turns up alive in the later seasons! Turns out she was living in a workhouse all that time. It was a proper mess when they finally reunited because she didn't even recognize him at first and had a totally different life. Watching their relationship try to mend while everything else in Whitechapel was falling apart was probably the most stressful part of the entire series for me.
