I did this for a school trip years ago, it was a killer workout but totally worth it. From the main floor all the way up to the Golden Gallery at the very top of the dome, it's 528 steps. You have to be prepared for it though. It’s not just one big straight shot of stairs.
The climb is broken up into three main parts, which is actually a nice way to do it because you get a break and a different viewing gallery at each stage. The first stop is the Whispering Gallery, which is 257 steps. That one is inside the cathedral, and it’s cool because of the acoustics. You whisper against the wall and someone across the dome can hear you clearly. That's a good place to catch your breath.
Then you keep going up to the Stone Gallery, which is the first outdoor one wrapped around the dome. That's another 119 steps, bringing the total to 376. The views start getting really good here, you can see all the landmarks like the Shard and the Tate Modern.
The last stretch is the final 152 steps to the Golden Gallery. This bit is definitely the steepest and narrowest, mostly a tight, winding spiral staircase which can feel a bit enclosed. But once you burst out onto that tiny balcony at the top, the view of London is absolutely stunning, you can see for miles. Just make sure you wear comfy shoes and maybe take a small bottle of water for the climb itself. It takes a solid half hour, maybe 45 minutes if you stop to enjoy the galleries. It’s a definite leg-burner for sure!

It’s five hundred and twenty-eight steps to the top balcony, the Golden Gallery. The climb up to the Whispering Gallery is 257 steps, so that's basically half way. That part is inside the dome and not too bad at all. It's after that where the stairs get more taxing, especially the final 152 steps to the very top because they're quite enclosed. Definitely worth the effort for the accomplishment and the view though!

528 steps. Done it twice. The second time was less painful. Make sure you check out the Stone Gallery which is outside, that's where you get your first decent external view of the city before doing the final climb to the Golden Gallery. It's a great spot for photos.

It's 528 steps right to the top, to the Golden Gallery. I remember counting a lot of them myself on the way up, but then I lost track somewhere around the Stone Gallery. Honestly, the most important thing to know is that it gets really narrow and steep for the last bit. If you’re not great with enclosed spaces or heights, the last set of stairs might be a struggle, but the view is epic.

Hey there, I've seen a few different numbers online but I'm pretty sure it's 528 steps to reach the Golden Gallery, which is the very highest point you can access. Don't skip it, the London skyline view from up there is completely unbeatable. Just pace yourself, especially on the final spiral staircase part which is a proper workout.

I think the official number is 528 steps to the highest point, which is the Golden Gallery. I went a couple of months ago and while it sounds like a lot, you break it up. You get the Whispering Gallery first, then the Stone Gallery, and then the final push to the very top. The Whispering Gallery is the coolest stop, the sound trick really works and you can look down over the cathedral floor.

528 steps is the magic number for the full climb to the Golden Gallery. It's a big total but the three different galleries break it up well. I actually found the descent harder on my knees than the climb up. Take your time and enjoy the three different views you get as you go higher.
