The alkane isomer of butane called 2-methylpropane is also known as isobutane. It is a branched-chain alkane with the chemical formula C4H10. Isobutane differs from n-butane (normal butane) in its molecular structure. While n-butane consists of a straight chain of four carbon atoms (CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3), isobutane has a branched structure with a methyl (CH3) group attached to the second carbon atom in the chain (CH3-CH(CH3)-CH3). This branching leads to different physical and chemical properties between the two isomers. Isobutane is commonly used as a fuel and refrigerant, among other industrial applications.
