On an Audi A3, the chassis number, also known as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), is typically located in several places:
Windshield: You can often see the VIN through the windshield on the driver’s side dashboard, near the bottom of the windshield. It is usually located on a metal plate or sticker.
Driver’s Door Jamb: Open the driver’s side door and look on the edge of the door jamb (where the door latches when closed). The VIN may be printed or stamped on a metal plate.
Engine Bay: In some models, the VIN may also be located in the engine bay, typically on the firewall (the wall between the engine compartment and the interior of the vehicle).
Registration and Insurance Documents: The VIN is also listed on your vehicle’s registration documents, insurance papers, and possibly on the title.
The VIN is a unique identifier for your vehicle and is used for registration, insurance, and various administrative purposes. It is typically 17 characters long and includes a combination of letters and numbers that provide specific information about the vehicle’s make, model, year of manufacture, and other details.
Check the base of the windshield, on the driver’s side. You can usually see it from the outside of the car, right through the glass. It’s often the easiest spot to find it without even opening a door or the hood.
It’s also stamped on a plate inside the driver’s side door jamb. Just open the door and look down at the frame where the door latches. You’ll see a sticker or a metal plate there with all the car’s info, including the VIN.
I’ve found it in a few places on my A3. The most obvious spot is that little plate on the dashboard, visible through the windshield on the driver’s side. It’s also on the sticker in the driver’s side door jamb, which also has tire pressure info and stuff like that. A lot of people also don’t know that it’s stamped directly onto the car’s frame. On my car, if you lift the bonnet and look down at the firewall, that’s the metal plate between the engine and the passenger compartment, you can see it there too. It’s also a good idea to check your car’s registration papers or the V5 document, as the VIN is legally required to be on there. If you’re really stuck, the VIN is often written on a sticker in the boot under the carpet, near the spare wheel. Having it in multiple places is for safety and verification, especially for parts and history checks, so if you can’t find it in one spot, just check another.
A lot of people forget this one, but it’s often in the owner’s manual or service book. There’s usually a sticker on the inside cover or a specific page that lists the VIN and the factory options for your specific car.
