The Battle of Thermopylae is often considered one of the most glorious defeats in Greek history. This battle took place in 480 BCE during the Greco-Persian Wars between an alliance of Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, and the invading Persian Empire, led by King Xerxes I.
The Battle of Thermopylae is renowned for the heroic stand of the Greek forces, particularly the 300 Spartans who famously fought to the death against overwhelming Persian forces. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held off the Persian army for several days at the narrow mountain pass of Thermopylae, allowing time for the Greek navy to prepare for the naval Battle of Salamis.
Although the Greeks were ultimately defeated at Thermopylae, their valiant resistance and sacrifice became legendary symbols of Greek courage, patriotism, and defiance against tyranny. The Battle of Thermopylae inspired countless works of art, literature, and film, cementing its place in history as one of the most iconic and celebrated battles of ancient Greece.
