  1. Forbes actually ranked him as the richest king in Nigeria and the second richest in Africa back in 2014, estimating his net worth around $300 million USD at the time. I’m sure that number has changed over the years but he’s still easily at the top. He’s known for having some serious luxury taste too. I saw a picture once of his custom-built 2012 Rolls-Royce Phantom and he apparently has a super expensive yacht, rumour has it it’s Nigeria’s most expensive one. It’s wild how many of these traditional rulers are also hugely successful businessmen with empires outside of their kingdoms. Guys like the Ooni of Ife or the Sultan of Sokoto are super wealthy and powerful, but Oba Akinruntan’s personal business empire just puts him in a different league entirely when it comes to pure net worth. It’s a great example of how the traditional power structure intersects with modern Nigerian commerce.

  2. From what I’ve seen in all the rankings and articles, the general consensus is that it’s Oba Obateru Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom in Ondo State. His wealth is mostly tied to his oil business, Obat Oil, which is a big player in the country. That’s the key difference, many other monarchs are very rich but his fortune is directly from a very successful, large-scale commercial venture he started and still runs.

  3. It used to be the late Oba Sijuwade, the former Ooni of Ife, he was incredibly rich and influential from his business dealings. But currently, the top spot is almost always given to the Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan, because of his massive wealth from the oil sector with Obat Oil. People often forget about him since the Ooni, Sultan of Sokoto, and Emir of Kano are more nationally famous, but when you look at the financials, the Olugbo is the wealthiest.

  4. I always hear conflicting reports, but the most popular and generally accepted name is Oba Obateru Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugbo. I guess because he’s a known oil billionaire it makes his wealth easier to calculate. I mean, the Ooni and Sultan are also ridiculously loaded, but a lot of that wealth is tied up in things that are harder to put an exact value on, or their businesses aren’t as public as a major oil company. It’s safe to say the Olugbo is the one with the biggest publicly recognised personal wealth.

  5. I think there’s a bit of confusion because some kings are more powerful politically and spiritually, like the Sultan or the Ooni, but richest in money is the Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Akinruntan. His business, Obat Oil, is just a huge money-maker. The estimated net worth of $300 million is crazy for a traditional ruler, even if it’s an old figure. That kind of money comes from private industry, not just from the traditional palace coffers.

  6. wealthiest individuals in Nigeria include business magnates, entrepreneurs, and prominent figures in various industries. However, Nigeria is a federal republic with no monarchy, so there is no “richest king” in the traditional sense of a monarch. Instead, Nigeria has traditional rulers known as kings, emirs, obas, or sultans, depending on the region, but their wealth is not typically measured in the same way as that of business leaders or entrepreneurs.
