The national song "Vande Mataram" was published in the novel "Anand Math" written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1882. "Anand Math" is a Bengali novel set in the background of the Sannyasi Rebellion in Bengal against the British East India Company's rule. The song "Vande Mataram" is featured prominently in the novel and became immensely popular as a rallying cry for Indian independence during the freedom movement.
