those dunes are basically just nature's way of moving sand around. when i'm out at sea, i see how wind pushes waves into shapes, and it's pretty much the same deal in the desert. the wind picks up tiny grains of sand and carries them along until it hits some kind of obstacle, like a rock or just a patch of scrub. once the wind slows down, it drops the sand, and over time, it piles up into those massive mounds.

it’s constant motion, honestly. the wind keeps blowing the sand up the gentle side of the dune and then it just slides down the steep side, which is why they seem to crawl across the landscape over the years. it's wild to think about, but even in the middle of nowhere, nothing stays in the same place for long. pretty cool how the wind acts like a sculptor even without any tools.
