Alaska is actually surrounded by a few different bodies of water, which makes navigating those northern routes pretty interesting. You've got the Bering Sea to the west, which is honestly one of the roughest patches of water I've ever had to cross. The currents there can be brutal, especially when the weather decides to turn on you without any warning.
To the south, you're looking at the Gulf of Alaska, and if you head up toward the north coast, that’s where you hit the Beaufort and Chukchi seas. It’s a massive area with some seriously cold temperatures, so it’s definitely not a place for light gear. The maps don't really do justice to how vast and icy it gets up there once you start moving past the coastal shelf.
