what causes volcanic islands to form

volcanic islands basically pop up when there's a serious amount of magma pushing its way up from the ocean floor. it happens mostly at those spots where tectonic plates are either pulling apart or one is sliding under another. when that molten rock hits the cold seawater, it cools down and builds up layer by layer until it finally breaks the surface of the water. seeing it happen in real life or even just sailing past those rugged, black rock formations makes you realize just how powerful the earth really is beneath our feet.

sometimes you also get these things called hotspots, where a plume of magma stays in one place while the tectonic plate moves over it. it's like a blowtorch burning through a metal sheet that's constantly sliding. that's exactly how the hawaiian islands formed. it's pretty wild to think that as you're cruising through the ocean, there's all this activity going on deep down that eventually creates land where there was nothing but deep blue water before.
