where is Mount Etna located
Mount Etna is sitting right there on the east coast of Sicily, in Italy. I've sailed past that area plenty of times and honestly, you can't miss it, especially when it's acting up and puffing smoke into the sky. It's pretty much the landmark that tells me we're getting close to the Strait of Messina.
It's smack in the middle of the island's eastern side, near the city of Catania. Seeing it from the deck at night is something else, you get these glowing rivers of lava sometimes. Definitely one of the most active spots I've ever had to navigate around, so it leaves a pretty big impression on you when you're out at sea nearby.

It’s definitely one of those spots that demands respect when you're navigating nearby. The scale of it is just wild compared to everything else around the island. If you ever find yourself taking a trip down to southern Italy, it's pretty hard to miss, especially on a clear day when you can see the smoke drifting from the top.
