My son is a Marine in Afghanistan. Please, help me think of something to send him other than the usual snacks, socks and stuff.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet but tuna was/is (he's on is second tour) always on my nephews wish list. They have those foil packages now that fit great in a box. He liked those Propel water additives too. Don't go cheap with the beef jerky. Uncle Mike's beef jerky comes highly recommended. Also, don't forget about Motomail. If you're not familiar with it, it's a free service offered by the Marines. You can send one page letters, at your hearts desire, on-line. It's printed out over seas and delivered within six days or so. It's like being able to blog him two or three times a week if you wish. I'd recommend typing your letter off-line in word then get on-line and copy and paste it into their format. It can time out if you work too long on-line and word, or some other word processor, helps keep you within the one page limit. You can even send pics now. Some pictures may take up half the page so, if you have a lot to say, you might have to write him more often.

These: http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/games/9c83/ Bought some of these while in Afghanistan to share and they were a real hit. Great for passing time!
Give him books, DVD's, CD's, video games. Take pictures/videos and send a home-made DVD with them on it.
Cool, her son is fighting for your right to be a total dick I don't remember when afghanistan declared war on us and decided to invade our country.
Porn.
Send him a Gameboy and a copy of Pokemon Red.
I sent my friend tons of stuff - food, toiletries, clothes, candy, etc... The gifts he appreciated the most were magazines (TIME, Newsweek, GQ, Maxim, Motor Trend, PopSci, etc.) and DVDs/Music. I believe downloaded movie files and mp3s may be contraband, but I put them on a 16GB flash drive. You could get a portable external hard drive and load up a lot of movies/tv shows with 500GB-1TB. Anything to pass the time. Mostly because there's a lot of downtime, but also to distract from the war...
Except I live in Canada. Her sons an idiot. Have fun with that warrantless wiretapping and your governments ability to detain you for life by labeling you terrorist. Some damn fine liberties and guaranteed rights her son is fighting for.
According to Mr. Michael Westen, the best things are things that can be reused - CDs, DVDs (TV series especially), really big books. That way, once he's done with them, he can barter them and trade them for other things, making the gifts last that much longer. Don't forget family photos, just to keep in touch with him and so he can remember why he's there.
Baby Wipes and starbucks coffee were always a welcome treat when I was over there.
