Have you ever tried to dumb down your choice of words for someone you know who has lower intelligence than you because you think they might not understand?

"My brother is developmentally challenged. I have to do this all the time. It's no fault of his, of course. He just only has the vocabulary of a 4th grader. It has the added benefit of cluing us in to when my mother is trying to coach him into thinking certain ways about things. Case and point, my brother was visiting with my mother and called me a "kept man." I actually didn't know what this meant, so I asked him. He looked at my mother. My mother squirmed. "

Guilty, but I did it politely as they were genuinely curious about a topic and i want to help them understand as best I could.

Pretty common. It's not that their dumb it's that I am smarter then them. You got the joke? No but seriously they're not dumb I'm just smarter. Rarely.

"Once used the phrase "to the various seminar venues" in a memo at work, only to have my boss change it to "from place to place to place.". He knew his audience better than I. "

All the time, though not necessarily lower intelligence, but rather different intelligence. Most people don't understand the technical aspects of any profession, let alone the jargon. Also dumming down speech doesnt have to mean talking slowly like to a stupid child.
