"Sleep apnea. I snore. A lot. So does most of my family. So do the people sleeping in almost every cartoon or movie that you see. So do healthy people for maybe a few minutes a night. Snoring loudly all night? Not so good. It turned out that basically, I drift off, stop breathing, and my brain goes into emergency lizard survival mode and goes, "Suck in some air, stupid!". I snort in a lungful of air, wake up a little, then drift off again. Repeat every few minutes all night long. I was never getting REM sleep. Consequently, I was also waking up a few times each night to go to the bathroom because it turns out that you can hold it a lot better when you're really asleep. I only thought to mention it to my doctor when I was prescribed medicine for something else and I mentioned that it made me snore a little bit less. I got a CPAP machine and discovered what a good night's sleep felt like. Now I wonder how the hell I ever got anything done before it. "

Chromesthesia - I see sounds, always have done - thought it was just a standard thing until someone pointed out how fucking bizarre that is. :p

PCOS. I thought it was normal for a girl to never know when she was getting her period. It would just not show up whenever it pleased.

"Before I had glasses I just assumed that everyone saw the same as me. I remember the first time playing cricket with glasses and was amazed at how I could now see the ball after it was hit. It was like everything was in HD now, I spent ages just staring at grass thinking "holy shit" "

I have extremely flat feet (pes planus, whatever) and wasn't really aware of it until my teens. It was always strange getting out of the pool and everybody else left perfect footprints with the heel and toes emphasized, and wherever I walked it looked like the entire population of the Shire had decided to go for a swim.

At nighttime I thought lights spread and spill for everyone. Driving at night looks like pretty fireworks. When it's rainy , the ground glows. Then I found out that's my uncorrected astigmatism...

"Bipolar disorder--I realized that I did some crazy things. I knew that people did decide to move across the country, and then do it 3 days later. But I thought I was just adventurous. I thought it was normal to not get out of bed for a month. I thought it was normal to sleep 2-3 hours a night for a couple of weeks. All my friends were staying up until 4 in the morning with me every night. I didn't realize that they slept until noon, while I was up before 7am. Once I got my diagnosis I looked back at things like this and thought, "Oh well that explains a lot." "

Ehlers-danlos syndrome. I thought everybody's joints could bend backwards and dislocate.

When I was younger I assumed everyone got as tired as me, they were just better at hiding it. Now I know my heart has a giant hole in it and I can do less than 50% of any fit person my age can do. I'm surprised I didn't do myself more harm by running around like a crazy lunatic. It'd be so cool to know how it feels to just be able to run around for a long long time without getting tired. Alas, I shall probably never know. Edit: I did an AMA on a previous account, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. Will continue looking. Edit 2: It's an AVSD (Atrial ventricular septal defect), and I also have Pulmonary hypertension (a lung condition). The whole condition together is Eisenmenger's syndrome, and sadly, there is no way to fix it. Plugging the hole would just make the lungs worse.

Pretty brutal cystic acne... It seemed normal until I hit my twenties and suddenly everyone else's went away. Hahaha, NOT MINE! I'm on medication now. :/ Edit: I went to a dermatologist and my medication is antibiotics and tretinoin (topical). It has helped a lot--my skin is pretty good now, especially compared to what it was. Trying things I read on the internet was not helping me, which is why I went to a doctor.
