We had a mini van that had a built in VCR and my parents also brought a portable DVD player that could connect to the VCR screen. So if we were going to be in the car for awhile I'd bring along some of my old vhs tapes and dvds and watch one of them with my headphones on. It was a win win for everyone involved. Or I colored.

Sleep. This was in the 80s. We didn't have hand held devices besides walkmans.

I was always content just watching the world go by and allowing my thoughts to roam, but other than that I'd just read.
