"Interesting idea, originating with Hobbes in "Leviathan." It's called instrumentalism, and basically states what the quote says, that our "reasons" for doing anything are entirely self motivated. The opposite view is found in other ethical theories. Opposing instrumentalism, there's the idea that certain things are right or moral and people do them not out of self-interest, but because they are the right thing to do. Example: I buy a homeless person lunch. An instrumentalist says this is because I have a need to perform acts of kindness and buying him/her lunch gives me personal satistfaction. A non-instrumentalists says that giving food to the poor is morally just and I performed this action purely because it is the "universally right" thing to do. /Philosophy Class I took this semester :) "

When I am sleeping I dream. I trod on a thorn. I misspell words, sometimes on purpose, sometimes not, no real reason. I meditate. During these activities I do not want.

Sure.

Wrong. The first example that popped into my head is helping a friend move. I've helped several friends move before. Sure, they will buy me dinner or something, but I would much rather be sitting at home online all day. I did not want to help them move at all, but they needed my help, so I would.

"Yes. A good deed only counts if you do it conciously. If people did things involuntarily, would it feel appropriate to thank them? No, of course not, because the "person" you're thanking had nothing to do with it. On the same token, we also have to be willing to accept responsibility for our mistakes, because only then will we acknowledge the legitimacy of the consequences and be motivated to learn from them. tl dr- Even if you did a nice thing because it makes you feel good, you still chose to do a nice thing. Take some pride in that, because it means your satisfaction is legitimate. "

Absolutely.

I disagree. Occasionally I NEED something. :)

"It's not saying much, really. Sure, I go to the bathroom to take a shit because I "want" to avoid shitting my pants in my office, but it's not like I had a real choice whether or not to have to shit. And, I went to the funeral because I "wanted" to say goodbye to a loved one. We often do things we don't want to do, but the simple argument is "we wanted to do it because we disliked the consequences of not performing the action, and wanted to avoid that." So like I said, it's not saying much. The opposite could be said also. "Every act you've ever performed since you were born was because you didn't want the consequences of performing a different act." "

I agree. I'd like to hear the argument against
