"In the near term, before 2100, there will be continued population expansion. The "lines" that define nations and governments will become blurred as national governments are controlled more and more by the wills of corporations and profit. There will be at least 2 major wars centered around the middle east and asia-pacific. We will go to space, the moon, and Mars. But this will be commercially controlled. The expansion of computers will slow down vertically and expand horizontally. This means speed and computing power will slow down and stall, but the utilization of computational power will expand in convenience devices like vehicles, toasters, etc. Then, technological singularity. Who knows where it will go from there. It could be the complete end of humanity. It could be Star Trek-esque. Immortality through mind downloads. What is not going to happen: zombies or alien invasion. "

I believe that we, as a society, will make at least 30 more movies about Batman.

Also (if it's true) and we can break the speed of light, this might lead off into a branch of technology where we can travel almost instantaneously (Ender in Exhile anyone? anyone?) and i know this sounds like sci fi but we can colonize other planets, scientists HAVE discovered worlds that are habitable, it's just that they are too far away for us to get there in a life time. ALSO in a worst case scenario we could go Wall-E style and send ourselves on a spaceship for many generation until we reach it....

" revert to Dark Age technology Made me think of "The Sword of Shannara" by Terry Brooks. It's set a medieval fantasy world but at one point they come across and ancient steel structure kind of like the frame of a skyscraper and also some sort of robot/mutant guardian. "

Slow extinction. Our greed and shortsightedness will lead to exhausting the planets ability to support us. The resource and water, food shortages will lead to wars, revolutions, famines, disease, the breakdown of society and eventual extinction. On the bright side - A million years from now there will be no sign that we were ever here and life will have returned to its former abundance.

Persistent population boom peaking at around 12 billion until the oil runs out. Around year 2150 or so. Then, serious economic hard times as our energy needs way outclass our supply. And climate variation starts to seriously affect agriculture (in some areas - a positive thing), (in most low-lying coastal areas - not so much). Population crunch during massive social upheaval as the have-nothings no longer care about respecting the have-everythings law. Wars over limited ressources. Population settling down to around 2 billion by 2300 or so.

Self-directed evolution goes horribly wrong, we make unbelievable progress at the cost of everything that was human about us.
