Greek guy living in Greece here. What has changed is that whenever you talk with someone the discussion shifts towards politics really fast. Many are afraid of the future and cannot decide which party to vote in the upcomming elections. The most concerning thing is that they dont fully understand why this whole thing is happening. They only see the consequenses. They hear about all those loans we get from the EU and the IMF but they dont see any money. Only salary cuts and businesses going bakrupt. As gsxr said though the state hasnt gone bankrupt on its bills towards the pensions and the sallaries yet. Medical bills.. well the pharmacies have stopped giving medications to the ppl with public health insurance because the state hasnt payed them what they are owed so ppl with longterm illnesses are in trouble atm. On the other side bars and cafes etc are full..

"My relatives on my mother's side live there and my grandmother is pretty much panicking. She's bought a bunch of canned food provisions "just in case". Some of her friends (old people) have been mugged. There are also a lot of protests going on and she's afraid of them, too. Political stuff is a mess. My aunt lost her job, got angry, and wanted to vote for the communist party in the last reelection called (her husband convinced her not to). In Athens, a lot of shops (seems like mostly restaurants, but that's just my perspective) have been closed and last year when I was there a lot of public stuff looked pretty shabby. But then in the village we actually spend most of the summer at everything's pretty normal. "

"Greek here, got fired a couple of days ago due to "budget cuts", don't care though, will manage to make do, life is pretty much the same here, it's just the media and politicians scaring people into reelecting sold out douchebags, anyway, who cares really, life is too short to worry about shit like that... i guess it's all about your mentality "

My sister was just there for a 3 week vacation and she said everyone was in a good mood, parties and bars were awesome, and there was no shortage of people at the beach. She traveled around the country quite a bit but didn't get to Athens so it might be different in the capital city.

I was just in Greece last weekend, Thessaloniki and Athens. People were out with their kids, buying food, walking along the beach, etc. So life as usual. Now I'm sure if I lived there it would be different though.

It's like 2008 in the US but everyone is yelling/crying in Greek instead of English

Well right now in athens its about 68F with 64% humidity. There are very few clouds so its a great night for going out on a romantic date. That's my on-ground viewpoint. If you want a restaurant recommendation, Psara's has great traditional Greek fare.

What you need to remember is when you see 10-20-30 % unemployment, you get shocked because it's new to you. They've lived it for years. Things for most of the population there haven't changed in a long time. Unemployment checks are still going through, medical bills are still get paid for, state employees are still getting paid.
