"Not a lawyer, but a close friend of one. She said, most of them (especially in smaller towns) are school friends at some point and the only ones in their field who understand the lingo and nuisances. So they end up having some professionally rivalry with a good personal bond. There are times they go against their favorite friend from law school (my friend was in family law and would often represent people who are divorcing, so did one of her closest friends!) and go for dinner after the whole thing settles. I remember the "loser" buying us dinner. It was hilarious and in good humor. They were both glad that divorce was over after 2years! "

We're business in the north, but party in the south. Maybe that has something to do with migratory habits and bird law.

The legal community generally gets along, but everyone knows who the local dickheads are - and nobody is less popular than a dickhead lawyer.

Nope, lawyer groups are like alumni associations, they're quick to network and have their own culture/codes. Although in movies you only see lawyers arguing in court, that's just one type of lawyer (called litigation lawyer). The vast majority of them have very conventional worklife (in an office, on a desk, only sometimes screams at someone). You don't bring personal hatred into a case when you're arguing on opposing sides, it's strictly professional. Imagine that's like doctors only save you if they are fond of you.
