I know that some animals, when they know they are going to die, they go off to be alone. No idea of that is coincidence but it would be a terribly sad idea. But to make it the best last days as possible? Do thinks you love together. Lay with her when you watch tv, and take her around to do the things she loves (if she still can.) Be happy with her. When my American Eskimo went blind and was declining due to lupus, we just did everything he loved like belly rubs and special treats during food time. Beau was an amazing dog, and we gave him the best last few months a dog could have.

I hope not.

Most animals don't understand their own mortality, but they can feel sadness when one in the pack/group dies. You'll see chips cradling their dead young for weeks as a sort of closure. It's only humans I believe that inherit the ability to understand our own mortality.

I don't know if they're aware of their own eventual death, but they certainly know what it is and respond to when they observe it in other animals.
