Companies pay to be included in the BBB. They carry NO weight. Send a notarized letter that you wish to cancel. Make a few copies. They will, of course, continue billing. Call management at the company and fax the letter and explain that you can hire an attorney to sue for their violating state debt collection statutes*, but you'd prefer not to. I have done this with 3 different companies. *Every state has debt collection statutes, and continuing to collect after canceling in good faith is a violation of those laws. There are law firms that specialize in consumer law that charge you NOTHING and get their money from suing the Big Boys (like AT&T). I used CT Consumer Law Group in my state for example. They took no fee. They saw my letter and return receipt and filed suit. I told them they could keep every penny, I just didn't want to be billed. (And I was serious). I got my account canceled (a MAJOR ISP) and never had to pay a cent. It felt good that the ISP had to pay, tho

"heh, I tried to cancel XM a week or so ago. The automated attendant asked me to say my phone number (to pull up the account), then say my zip code. It got them both correct. Then it asked me to say what I wanted (giving me several options). It got that right too. When the next list included "Cancel account", and I said "Cancel account" it said "I don't understand. Please say..." "Cancel account" "I'm sorry, I don't understand. Please hold ... " 20 minutes later, I was able to cancel my account. But not before they tried to entice me into remaining a customer for the rest of the year (my sub is up in June) at no additional charges. "

i think so too. i can't cancel my feed the children account, so i changed my bank info on them. they still send me mail though

How does the BBB allow practices like this to continue? The BBB carries no weight with companies of that size & geographic reach.

This reminds me of when I tried to cancel my account with iPrimus. They told me that my account would be in credit by $11.87 and that they would post out a cheque for that amount. I then continued to receive monthly statements advising that my account was in credit by $11.87. For nine months. I moved houses 3 times in that time. I kept ringing them up and telling them to either send me a cheque, or don't, keep the money, I really don't care, just stop sending me the friggin' statements. They kept assuring me that they would, but kept right on sending them. I eventually had to lodge a complaint with the telecommunications ombudsman, which I'm told costs the company being complained against $150 for every complaint lodged against them, in order to get them to stop.

"Somewhat related: I found out today that I have to call Microsoft in order to prevent them from automatically renewing my XBL subscrition when it runs out. There was nothing telling me that "Automatic Renewal" would default to "ON" and I only found out because I went to check how long I have left on my current subscription. They could just as easily make the option changable on their website, but of course they have to make it difficult for the customer and make me call in, where I'll no doubt sit on hold for at least 10 minutes to resolve a trivial matter. I'm strictly buying game cards for XBL from now on. "
