Actually funny that I came across this, I'm just finishing up watching a 6-part documentary on BBSes, and it brought back a lot of nostalgia. I think some sort of scene might re-appear from people who were originally part of it when it was in its heyday--but as far as kids who only grew up with flash web-browser based Internet? No way. I was fortunate enough to catch BBS fever in its waning years in the early 90s before BBSes started turning into ISP's and moving away from terminal-based use. It was really something else. The magic for me was that your computer would be disconnected most of the time, but when you connected, it was like a temporary pass to another world, and then you were disconnected again. The whole dialing up part was key to the experience for me.

I have learned that there is a BBS (over telnet, not over a phone line) that basically every computer user in Taiwan still uses. There are about 150,000 people online during the daily peak. There are 23 million people in Taiwan.

I was a trader back in the BBS days, among other things. I made the UK blueboxed-Hawaii-to-US Kessel run in less than than 14.4K parsecs. The internet isn't going to die.

It's funny you should say that, someone I've spoken to has suggested this before. If you were to start a BBS, though, I'd certainly call in. I've got both a landline and a modem. You might want to start negotiating price with the phone company - a line with incoming only service is pretty hard to get, but if you can call customer service and ask for a measured rate or message unit line (meaning outgoing local calls from that line == $$$), you might be able to get some lines significantly cheaper.
