The scale of the universe is what I base most of my ideologies off of, and I spend a fair amount of time thinking about it as well. I can definitely see the parallels between the Universe and the Abrahamic God. Both are unimaginably powerful, incomprehensible, dwarf the scale of humanity to the point of absurdity. Both allow life to flourish and rule impassively. I chose the Universe rather than God because God goes too far, by playing a role in the history of humanity. That makes us too important. In reality we're a lump of biomass that pollute the local .0000000001% of the universe with radio signals, and even if we detonated all of our nukes at once, we would have absolutely no effect on our solar system if one were to look at it half a billion years later.' For clarification, I don't actually believe that the Universe is self aware or anything. It is simply an incredibly large, incredibly complex, mostly empty void. I think of it more as an agnostic would approach Bud

to be very honest i do not see huge difference between what i believe in and all of you commenting below It's not that difficult to be good without god, really.
I don't really believe in any kind of higher power or force that reassures/encourages me to keep going. Where atheists, or at least me individually, draw purpose is just life itself, I suppose. What I mean is, in the atheistic/scientific mindset, we are the culmination of 13.45 billion years of physical processes and chance. The formation of stars, galaxies, and solar systems all happened long before we ever arrived. To me it is humbling to be given the opportunity to exist and explore this fascinating, indifferent universe. The fact that the atoms I am composed of were formed by distant, forever unknown stars like the ones in the night sky is a humbling fact. All of this leads to me to appreciate my life and try to make the most of it that I can. Life is delicate and rare - and that's why I have morals, feelings, and compassion just like (mostly) everyone else. Religion is not needed for inner peace and purpose.
"This article was posted in the New York Times a few days ago: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/18/good-minus-god/ This quote sums it up nicely: ""Think now about our personal relations -- how we love our parents, our children, our life partners, our friends. To say that the moral worth of these individuals depends on the existence of God is to say that these people are, in themselves, worth nothing[.]" The corollary to the notion that you are only a moral person because God instructs you to be, is that if you were not explicitly instructed to behave that way, you wouldn't. Do you really believe that to be true about yourself? If God didn't instruct you to love your family, you wouldn't love them? If God didn't instruct you to be kind you wouldn't be kind? Would you really commit theft if it wasn't forbidden by God? Rape? Murder? What does that say about you, then, if the answer to any of that is "yes"? "
Atheists don't have a belief in a power. Your question, not to be condescending, is the equivalent of you asking what my favourite dessert is? You like chocolate cake, and you know others like ice cream. I don't have or want a dessert. I'm content without one. Atheism is the absence of a 'belief in a power' rather than a replacement for it.
No, we don't. Atheists don't believe in any sort of un-observable 'power', whether you label it 'God' or otherwise. My own consciousness and willpower is sufficiently powerful and motivating. One naturally has creative outlets and wants to be good to their family and better the world just a little bit. With or without Islam, wouldn't that be the case for you? I just accept the fact that so much about the universe is unknown, and that my life is probably pretty insignificant significant to it... but those kinds of thoughts are unknowable, and thus un-actionable and don't really have any influence on my day to day life.
Understand that you do not believe in the existence of any God, however i'm sure there's some power that you believe in that keeps you going. This is where you're wrong. I try not to act like an asshole so that I'm not an asshole, not because I'm afraid of the consequences an imaginary being or a book told me or lists as a scare tactic.
however i'm sure there's some power that you believe in that keeps you going. Nope. If anything it would be physics, the science that describes the interactions of everything in our universe and predicts outcomes based on circumstances and inputs. Doesn't get much closer to an all-powerful force than that.
I honestly just believe in myself and all the tangibles in life. Whatever anyone needs to get them through the time that they wake up and when they go back to sleep is 100% ok, accurate and totally justified in my book. For me, believing that there is god out there does nothing for me. It doesn't make me sleep better, and it doesn't make me want to be a better person. Science does nothing for me, either. Life and existence is so vast that no person can really wrap their head around it. For me, I spend as little time worrying about things that I can't understand and will never see/feel/grasp and try to focus my time and energy on the things around me and the tangible ways I can make my life better. I also feel like Atheists can be just as bad as most religious nuts, in the sense that they stick so true to their atheism that they might as bell believe in an Atheist religion. But that's a whole other can of worms.
the only thing that keeps me going is my fear of death.
