Another thing is the top part. Instead of just saying "short," tell them how many fingers or inches you want off. If you are worried about the hair sticking up, tell them to "texture" it or point cut the ends, which breaks up the blunt lines. Also, knowing your hair type helps a ton; if you have thin hair, asking for "weight removal" or "thinning" might actually make it look worse, so be careful with that one. Just be clear about what you do at home too, like if you actually use wax or gel, because that changes how they should cut the layers.
