Why does it seem as though printers break sooner rather than later?

Money and toner. Here is why, from my little it world. The manufactures do want to create printers that will last for a long period of time anymore because the cost to maintain printer parts get expensive and the production of toner is in the same boat. So they only get them to last for a shorter time then you will keep buying a new printer. knock on wood but I have a Xerox Phaser with solid ink and I've had that unit for a good five years and I think that with the solid ink I have less moving parts so it tends to last a little longer.

Perfect designed obsolescence. It sure works out well for HP.
this documentary will help explain.
lots of moving parts, made in China out of plastic
Cheap materials, lots of moving parts, heat and electricity. They are also prone to getting very dirty internally, ink jet and lasers both. You can make them last longer barring any complete breakdown by keeping them clean.
Because they have a lot more moving parts than almost anything else in your house. You wouldn't expect something costing PS30 within that many moving parts to last forever. But if you pay PS200 you can expect something which lasts.
Do you perform at least basic maintenance on them, like occasionally blasting them out with canned air and maybe using some Rubber Renue on the rollers?
