It is not dirt, it is soil. Dirt is soil out of place, much like a weed is a plant/flower out of place. Soil is defined as the life supporting natural body on the earth's surface that is the result of millions of years of formation due to the following factors: biota, parent material, time, climate, topography. There are twelve orders of soils: Spodosols, Aridisols, Andisols, Alfisols, Oxisols, Mollisols (the most fertile and best suited for agriculture), Histisols, Gelisols, Vertisols, Inceptisols, Entisols, Ultisols. ...and I thought all these years studying to earn a degree in Renewable Resources didn't teach me a thing. edit: spelling

According to this, The USGS says at least 1,000 million grams, or roughly 1,000 tons of material enters the atmosphere every year and makes its way to Earths surface .

I'm pretty sure a large portion of dirt is the remnants of decaying organic matter.

I had a very insane science teacher who would fly into a vicious rage if someone used the word 'dirt'. She insisted that dirt didn't exist, and the substance we had in mind was 'SOIL'. SOIL YOU BUNCH OF SNOT-NOSED, IGNORANT MONSTERS!!!

Well according to some crazy beliefs we are made from dirt. Funny thing is that the dirt in your house consists mostly of your own skin. So I think babies come from dirt. Yep.
