You got scammed. You've never heard of young people selling magazines before? They can actually treat the kids pretty bad. I did some research on the subject, and uncovered another problem related to the magazine sales. The unscrupulous companies who put these kids out on the street to go door-to-door often work the sellers like indentured servants. Many of them are loaded up on a bus and taken to distant areas where they are pretty much forced to work all day and most wind up making very little money. It is promises of prizes like trips that entice these young people into signing up for the work, but the majority of them end up with very little to show for their effort. From here. And I'm sure there are other stories you could find.

I'm willing to accept the lost money as a lesson learned, but I'm more worried about what they'll do with my bank information. I will notify my bank, but is there anything else I can/should do? Should I get our bank account number changed?

Well I went into our credit union today and told them what happened. She recommended I close the account, so we transferred the money to a new checking account and will have to change all our direct deposits, automatic payments, etc. It will be a huge pain, but I think we'll feel better about it in the long run. I feel really embarrassed by the whole thing, but it has been a valuable lesson, too.

Door to door magazine subscription sales are a classic scam. Yes, you were scammed. Notify your bank. Be more wary next time.
