My doctor made me go to this fucking Licensed Professional Counselor (a clinician with a master's degree in counseling) and after 3 sessions all she ended up doing was acting as a very expensive Book of the Month Club advocating for Jon Kabat-Zin's "Wherever You Go, There You Are". I wasn't paying her to recommend books to me. I was paying her to give actual counseling. Recommending 2500-year-old religious practices thinly veiled as pop psychology does not make for sound clinical advice. And fuck all who get on this Dr-Phil-meets-Dalai-Lama bandwagon. "

Here's a concise guide to the practice of mindfulness meditation. If you like the results, a good book to read is Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior by Chogyam Trungpa. Finally, it has recently been shown that even moderate meditation training can improve cognitive ability.
