I had a long conversation with some fundamentalists in my family. What they said was a valid point though I personally disagree because I don't have the same beliefs as them. They said that to them marriage is a union between a man, woman, and God. Because the government has made marriage an institution they feel the need to defend it as they define it. To them they see it as the government trying to regulate morality and it's ultimately a lost cause. They would rather see NO marriage on the books but if the government is going to do it then they feel they need to defend their morals and define it how they understand it. Basically they don't want to be in a country that condones immoral behavior in their opinion. They don't care if people are homosexual from any legal standpoint they just don't want homosexuality condoned as moral behavior by their government. This isn't really the argument you hear that often.

This thread explicitly asks for people who oppose gay marriage to speak out and offer their reasoning. The main topic isn't even a debate over whether or not gay people should have the right to marry. Yet all that seems to be happening is bashing those people who do so. How are we to have an honest, open discussion if people are afraid to express their honest opinions?

I've seen 3 main arguments: Encroaches upon the religious sanctity of marriage. People think that it would devalue their own marriage if gays were also allowed to marry. Having both a mother figure and father figure is recommended for raising a child, as it gives a more diverse role model set for the child. In the US there are a number of tax breaks that come with being married. These are in place because it is assumed that the couple will eventually produce a family, and producing offspring is encouraged. A gay couple cannot produce offspring. Gay couples are less likely to end up with a kid.

I had this discussion with my gran and she said that she personally believed that two people of the same gender shouldn't be in a relationship, and she blamed her religious views and upbringing, which didn't surprise me too much as she's from an older generation and had a vicar for a husband. What she said next though blew me backwards. She said that even though she believed it was wrong that she doesn't believe that her opinion should stop someone else from making a decision which makes them happy. In her words 'I personally think that gay marriage is wrong, but I support it one hundred percent. Because everyone deserves to be happy, and to take away someones right to happiness and love is more horrid than anything I can imagine.' I gained a lot of respect for her during that conversation.

Personally I think no one should be able to get legally married. Let religion handle that useless ceremonial crap. In law it should be a completely separate act, like a civil union, that requires recognition from the government that two people are entering into a contract to bind assets.

Well, honestly.. The penis is naturally for penetration of a vagina, not the butthole. Yes this goes for conventional opposite sex marriage too. Anal sex is not healthy Not made out to be comedic

"The real threat to marriage is divorce, yet no "traditional marriage" supporters EVER talk about outlawing divorce. "
