One may start shut down because they are uncomfortable that you felt he need to ask, another might be totally understanding and not care. The answer too the question you asked is "Do you have an STD?". Your approach too the question would need more details about the person your asking. "

Why would you ask? It's not like they're going to say yes and miss out on the sex. Just use protection and hope for the best. Most STDs are fairly easily treated.

Yeah, that is a before you even kiss conversation. I wouldn't say first question on the first date but pretty soon after if the date went well.
