how do you deal with having a boss/supervisor/manager that is clearly and unequivocally less intelligent than you? (and probably everyone else at your workplace)

Well first of all, if you're going to be picky about his grammar...you have to make sure your own is also correct. (Who's and Whose in the last sentence). Secondly, depending on the age of your superior, things like excel, powerpoint, zip files etc is not innate knowledge. These are things that people in their 20's have grown up with, but for people older than that, computers can be a little bit of a struggle. They're complex machines and the whole technology thing can be a little too much for some people. Like I tell my employees all the time, who often feel the same way you do about our superior, it's not going to change. If you can't handle it, it might be time for you to start looking for a new job. There is no way to bring up your complaint to anyone in a superior position without it ending badly for you. Sorry for being blunt, but either deal with it or move on. And maybe calm down a little bit.

"I work in retail with idiots that act like children (in the form of maturity) and many believe strongly in the current republican party. I just keep to small talk and stay away from "controversial" issues and I'm alright. "
How do you guys deal with someone who's stupidity is so astounding that you not only question their superior rank in your company, but you question your company as well? whose I'm not usually a grammar nazi, but if you're picking on somebody else for a misspelling, I figured this was fair game.
When confronted with incompetent superiors or favoritism of incompetent superiors toward incompetent coworkers the only winning move is not to play. I like to celebrate 5:00 as being that special time every day when everyone in my office is dead to me.

Start with a healthy dose of humility.
I've come to accept that being promoted and climbing the corporate latter requires an entirely different set of skills related to doing your work well (some managers have both, others have only one). And it's not disastrous if a sup only has people and managing skills, as long as they can make good decisions. But sometimes Peter's Principle/Dilbert's Law comes into play as well. I too enjoy pointing out others minor grammatical errors to reinforce my fragile sense of intellectual superiority.
Bosses are often bosses because of their leadership skills, not because they're the sharpest knife in the drawer. Ideally they'll smartly delegate tasks and have your back if say someone from higher up gets pissed off and wants to unload blame onto you. However, if they're the other extreme, backstabbing and blaming their underlings and acting stupid, well, often that just works itself out, particularly if you document these incidents and know when to let someone just go ahead and make their own mistakes, then help fuel the fire, like lighting the afterburner of their ass on the way out the door.
You have to realize that he's not the boss because of his 'grunt' skills, otherwise he'd be a grunt. If you think you have better management skills, than by all means put up your dukes, otherwise learn to respect what he does for the company, even if it means unzipping the odd file for him
