If you were an Allied soldier in WW 2, would you prefer to be sent to the Asian or European theatre? Why?

European. Dad fought in the US infantry in Europe and there are letters from him near the end of the war where he mentions their fear that they'll be sent to the CBI theater or worse. He was on cloud nine when we A-bombed Japan and they surrendered. Not saying he didn't experience horrors in Europe with combat, slave camps, and civilian death and privation, but they all thought the war in Asia was worse.

Europe. America was pretty open about its Europe first policy. Plus in bootcamp we had to learn swimming for a week because drowning killed a lot of marines in ww2. Would be shitty to spend all the time and energy preparing for battle only to drown to death before you even had a chance to raise your rifle. When I was in a lot of gear was designed to float. Also malaria, fts

Europe if you were captured I'd rather take my chances with the germans. (No offense japan but back than you didn't have the best reputation for treating pows well)

"To quote HBO's the pacific "You gyrenes, you got nothing but jungle rot and malaria." Send me to Europe, I want to bag my self a luger and preferably some ladies in Paris. "

Europe, Pacific theater was a whole different level of fucked up.

Based on what we know about either theatre of war, I'm calling bullshit on anyone who says they'd prefer the Pacific, Lol.

European. Shorter commute and no Japanese those guys were nuts.

European. Because fighting against japanese was a lot harder and deadlier. They were also extremly sadistic and would more likely torture you.

Not what you're asking, but interesting tidbit--As I recall, of all non-combat vets, those stationed in South Pacific had the highest incidence of PTSD due to isolation. Psychiatrists of that era had never seen combat stress reactions in non-combat soldiers, which led to the rejection of shell shock theory of PTSD that pointed to concussive effects of mortar weapons as trauma source.

Asian Theatre. Mostly because you are at the end of WWII and Battles are sporadic (If i were a US Army/ Marine / Navy / Coast Guard / Highway Partrol)
