A microcontroller kit from Radio Shack which teaches you how to program it. I think this is it, or very similar: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2117994 I mean, maybe not that one specifically, necessarily. I'm sure there are better things like Arduino, and you need to have an RS-232 serial port (which I happen to have on my laptop, but that's getting kind of rare without an adapter now). Anyway, it came with an LED which was lit red if powered one direction, an green the other. I got it to fade smoothly from red to yellow to green by timing the percentages of pulses in each direction one afternoon. (That fading thing wasn't in the book. I just remember using that type of trick from a microcontroller class in college.) I haven't messed with it since, but I want to. I was planning on trying to get it to drive some servos that I bought. I was going to get into robots like 3 years ago but I haven't touched it since then. Doh!

go to Edmund Scientific.com or whatever....lots of stuff. Archie McPhee's in Seattle for real goon squad crap.
Not to get into specifics but if you have the right permits you can totally by high explosive components in a hardware store. And even back in the day when my grandfather was farming he honestly had a dynamite permit so he could clear land and tree stumps for farming. Seriously, agricultural supply stores can harbor some dangerous stuff if placed in the wrong hands.
You can buy an honest to goodness LASER for a couple bucks. Talk about living in the future.
http://www.inventables.com/technologies?page=4 Absolutely anything from here.
Beer! Some have argued that this wonder of chemistry and biology is the reason for civilization itself. It tastes awesome (Warning, it can also taste terrible!), it's a great social lubricant, is the equivalent of liquid bread, safer to drink than the water in some 3rd world countries, and it can get you hammered. Not sciencey enough for you, you say? You can make it at home with a little know how and the right equipment.
One word. Those little thingys that you get at the store that you can click them and they get really hot and you can reuse them over and over again.
a can of paint for my car....that changes color completely like a mood ring with temp changes. can really be blue in cold, and red in hot. not to be confused with the dumb pearl stuff on low riders, all green and purple, ugh.
You can buy the elements necessary to make a nuclear reactor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8HTm_qhSBo Enjoy!
oxygen tank, a rubber tube and some matches.
