Teachers, do you guys have cliques and friend groups like the students do? If so, what drama has come of it?

"I used to be an IT guy at a school. Due to my position I was always welcomed, but never officially part of any of the teachers cliques (perhaps the business teachers, as computers were under that umbrella). Jesus fucking Christ there is about as much drama as there is with the students, during my stay I learned about an affair between two married teachers, teacher bullies, the cool PE "coach" teachers, the obvious burnout stoners. It's basically all the drama of high school, except amped up because these are adults and high school does not end for them. I think the most dramatic example of this is having a teacher discreetly ask me where the new security IP cameras were going to be installed and me turning around and going "I really don't think that's information that I should be providing". All of a sudden the entire shop department hated me. A year later that teacher was transferred to another school because they found out that teacher was dealing pot to the other teachers. "

"At my school we have: The Millennials- The "young guns" (despite not being that young) who generally like our students as people and are more willing to try new techniques and technology. The "Pushbackers"- These are the people who every time admin tries to implement something new or our ELL/SPED departments talk about accommodations/scaffolds for kids responds with "I'm going to push back on that." They like their subject but just want to stand their every day and lecture about it. The PE teachers- Show up in sweats to student conferences. Ignore every staff meeting because how the fuck do you take AVID notes in PE? The Sports Bros- Desperately try and get the rest of us to participate in their March Madness pool every year. None of them support our local NFL team for various reasons that they will gladly tell you about all lunch period. The Shop Teacher: No one likes him. He's weird and creepy. "

Yes, in high school, teachers often commune with colleagues who teach the same subject, particularly if they have common planning. In a large schools like ours, many teachers have no idea who teachers in other subjects are. We have almost 200 teachers and I only know 37 by name.

There are definitely colleagues that I feel more drawn towards than others. One or two that I absolutely cannot stand. At the end of the day, however, the kids and the school come first. You can't publicly have drama among colleagues. Sometimes you just have to put their gradework in jello in the privacy of the teacher's lounge at 7:30 AM before anyone else arrives.

"At my teaching jobs (early childhood) there's always been a clique division that goes kinda like this: Teachers that should "do less" and stop humble bragging, and stop making frenemies with each other just to gossip Teachers that everyone knows aren't very good Teachers that don't fall into these two categories and are pretty good at what they do/ enjoy their lives outside of children. Like others have said, often it's by subject. But there are a LOT of friendships that go beyond subject. There are a few Karens and Kyles but I had a great mentor that pointed them out early and gave me a heads up

Teachers are the worst for this.

Sort of... It was weird tbh. Our staff room was always friendly and had no drama. It was just a collection of tired, overworked and underpaid adults who acted like adults. But, I heard all sorts of madness from the other staff rooms. Some of the colleagues from my staff room taught in multiple blocks, and they mentioned how in the other staff rooms they chose to be quiet because there was a lot of internal hatred and backstabbing that they wanted to stay clear of. The closest thing we had to drama was our dislike of the teaching assistants, who kept stealing our stuff. No idea how they were not all fired... well actually I totally do, because budgets, but there we go.

Not a teacher, but at my high school there was an obvious split between liberal and conservative faculty. There was a liberal faction and a conservative faction, and they barely disguised their disdain for each other.
