Still without power, I'm the night watch while my family is asleep making sure looters do not attempt to break in or steal our outdoor generator. What are some tips or advice I can use to better our safety and the protection of our property?

Are you armed? If so, are you prepared or trained properly on how to use your weapon(s) if something were to happen? What is/are the best vantage point(s) to survey the area? Are you going to stay in one area or move between areas? Do you have ways to distract possible intruders? Do you know what to say to them to dissuade their actions? Do you have contact with a close neighbor? Could you contact them quickly if you needed help or information from them? You might be overreacting. This isn't a zombie outbreak. Stay calm above all else, and stay alert as well as you can. Try to visualize all possible outcomes before making too hasty a decision. Try to prepare yourself as best you can and fully familiarize yourself with your environment. Keep us informed while you can. Stay safe (:

Try putting your generator in the garage and running an exhaust house outside. Then at least you'll have walls guarding it as well.

In my experience, a solar powered motion light can be a good indicator that something is up, as well as being a deterrent for would-be thieves. You can find them at most hardware stores for 30-40 bucks. Another help is a guard dog. Many are suggesting a gun, if you're not comfortable with that, get some bear spray and a baseball bat. Spray then swing. Be sure to drill a hole in the bat handle and put a strong lanyard on it, so you aren't disarmed in a worse case scenario.

If anyone comes in, just act crazy. I'm talking batshit crazy. Make chimp noises, piss your pants, anything to throw them off. I guarantee they will run in terror.

In reality, you're already doing it. Deciding to do a dedicated night watch vs. hoping it will still be there in the morning is the best plan of action. You can also look as to why you're running the generator in the first place. Is it for heating? To run your refrigerator? To charge your phones? Lighting? What? Then look how your can plan better so you're not running your generator at night, allowing you to lock it up and not have the noise attract bandits. There's some tips and tricks for alternate power options, but as you're already in the middle of the situation, reducing your need for running a generator is your best option.
