Dark City -- a space-noir, like the Matrix but darker and cooler. No kung fu, though. (Fun fact: the subway station in the Matrix was modeled on the one at the end of Dark City.) Solaris -- a smart, deep concept incredibly suspenseful and surprisingly sentimental. Be warned: the pacing doesn't conform to Hollywood standards. Soviet audiences were extremely patient. Metropolis -- Fritz Lang's 1927 silent classic looks like Blade Runner, with a highly relevant dystopia of inequality and automatons. Brazil -- This movie is wild. One man fights a sinister dystopian government that controls every facet of life with TSA-grade incompetence.

"I know it's not quite what you asked for, but if you're willing to check out some some older, more cerebral stuff, check out the movies "The Questor Tapes" and "Colossus: The Forbin Project". Both are excellent. "

Even though it's not in space, Ghost in the Shell. There's the original movie, which is fantastic, and the Stand Alone Complex series. It's intelligent, compelling, and thought provoking. Of course, if you're looking for some classic sci-fi that covers a little bit of everything, you're missing out if you haven't seen Cowboy Bebop yet. Good music, too.

Europa Report. This gives me hope that I might actually live to see humanity find life on another rock.

Not much in terms of CGI and not in space, but one of the absolute best sci-fi movies I've watched is Twelve Monkeys. Really good sci-fi concept while at the same time captures the philosophical undercurrents of the 90s zeitgeist. And great acting.

Time crimes or Primer and The Man from Earth are all worth a watch. Moon is the best space movie of recent times imo
