My psychology teacher told us that one of his colleagues drew a heart on the chalkboard without saying anything. The fact that she did something weird/unexpected got her student's attention, though it didn't last. A good way to keep them focused is to relax/make a joke/whatever every 10/15 minutes, students usually lose interest after 15/20 minutes of the same thing so they start misbehaving.

Poison them and give the antidote to no one. Dead bodies can be convinced to pay attention fairly easily. Just don't ask them to remember any of it.

Promise some sort of game or something they really enjoy afterwards if they pay attention, and something that they don't enjoy afterwards if they don't

I would treat them like I treated my daughter when she was growing up. I don't yell so I would at the beginning of the year make sure that they knew when I called for their attention it was time to stop playing around and that once we got the work done they could have some free time. But we had to get the work done first. Mutual respect has always been my go to.

Get a few blank papers and a belt. Burn the papers and whack the belt into a kid's desk as hard as I can.
