The explosion shook our garage door, the ash drifted over us. My boss at the time was national guard and was deployed. I have ash from the crater. My brother was in Eastern WA. At noon it was dark from the ash cloud. My in laws drove as far south as they could to see it. Some friends lost family members in the blast zone. If you get a chance go to the visitors center at Mt St Helens. Amazing place. My son has summited on the mountain in the last 6 years, he said the dome was cool to see. Edit to add we live in Snohomish county north of Seattle. News was really exciting for a couple of weeks.

My dad lived in Marysville and reportedly got the urge to go get some of his friends and eat some of the ash. Most of it had already been cleaned up by the time he had this idea and they could only find one yard in the neighborhood with all the ash still clinging to the leaves of the plants out front. They all licked the leaves, becoming one with the mountain I guess, and were then yelled at by the owner for eating what turned out to be pesticides. Either that or he BS'd this entire story and I bought it wholesale like an idiot, it wouldn't be the first time.

So much ash on friggin everything. When you thought you finally got something clean more would show up. While it was interesting to watch (we were across the sound and could see it in the distance) it felt like the ash would never go away....
